Unilateral total hip replacement is a treatment procedure that replaces a damaged hip joint with an artificial hip joint. This surgery is typically performed on patients who have pain and disability from arthritis or other conditions that damage the hip joint. The first step in a unilateral total hip replacement is to prepare the patient for surgery. This includes doing a physical examination, taking x-rays, and performing any necessary tests. The next step is to make an incision in the skin over the hip joint. Then, the surgeon will detach the muscles and tendons from the bone so that they can access the joint. After access to the joint is gained, the surgeon will remove any damaged bone and cartilage. The new artificial hip joint will then be placed into position and secured with screws or cement.
